The office of Sheriff began in Colonial times and has continued to serve an important role throughout Virginia’s history. Initially, the Sheriff was not only the chief law enforcement officer but also the election supervisor and tax collector. The Sheriff is a constitutional officer duly elected by the voters to serve a four-year term. Sheriff Ronald D. Oakes took office on January 1, 1996 and is responsible for a broad range of public safety functions.

The Sheriff’s Office is located at 224 Water St SE, Wise Va. and is open through the week, Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. to serve you. Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
